An Update on One-Lung Ventilation in Children

Study Type & Method: Narrative review

Commentary: A comprehensive update on the use of one lung ventilation (OLV) for thoracic surgery in children. This narrative review article addresses the indications for OLV followed by a review of the anatomy and physiological aspects relevant to the paediatric population. There is scarcity of research in this area as the cases requiring OLV are significantly fewer compared with adults. The article seeks to address this by reviewing the different methods to achieve OLV (endobronchial intubation and bronchial blockers (intra vs. extraluminal) and age appropriateness of each technique. In addition, this article provides an excellent summary of the advantages and disadvantages for each method.
